1960's Monochrome

For my Final Major Project in the first year of my course I decided that my project title would be 1960's Monochrome. During this project I researched how the nineteen sixties effected fashion and other cultural influences of the decade.

This is my A2 moodboard for the project with work including Piet Mondrian, Paco Rabanne and William Klein.
This moodboard was included within my sketchbook with with work from Bridget Riley, Mary Quant and Andre Courreges.

Research and work from Mary Quant.
Research and work from Paco Rabanne.

Here I researched 60's architecture. I was really influenced by the geometric shapes within the buildings.
Primary drawings of architecture around Exeter.
I decided to do rubbings of geometric items around the house to inspire my project.
Here I have been influenced by negative
paneling, removing fabric to create geometric
shapes.
I then developed basic initial designs based on my
research.

Here I have experimented with creating positive
paneling by constructing geometric shapes.
Here I began looking at Tomoko Nakamichi advanced pattern
cutting and how this is directly linked to the architecture I had
already been looking at.

This is my final design drawing for this project
with in depth annotation on every aspect
of the garment.
Here I did more of a technical drawing of how this garment
will be done and undone and any other aspects
of decoration.

This is the pattern piece for the front of my top,
including a square neckline and darts to create
a shape.
This is the back of the top I created with a
higher neckline and darts at the bottom to
create shape around the waist.

This is the pattern piece for the centre back of my
skirt, leaving an open seam for the addition
of a zip
This is the centre front of my skirt which contains
a fold so the fabric will be doubled over. It
also has darts to create shape around the waist.

This is the pattern piece for my skirt facing to create
a beautifully finished waist seam.

This is my documentation of some of the making process of this project.

These are my favorite images of my final outcome. I am immensely proud of the outcome and very glad it gained me
a distinction for the first year of my course.

Project Proposal:

Section 1: Rationale (Approx 100 words) Reflect on what you need to build on from last project
Throughout the units required in the previous projects I have been able to develop and further my skills, mainly when making and finishing my garment and samples. I have acquired new knowledge in the form of the importance of having a broad range of research, particularly primary, and making contextual links to the work I decide to produce. I have understood that the more research I do the more informed my work will be. When researching, I found it was important to not only study the fashion of the decade or theme but I am looking at but also the other influences of the time. For example, the art, style and culture to get a better understanding of why people dressed a certain way. An example of this would be how excited many people were by the invention of the mini skirt in the 1960s as it was completely new and skirts had never been so short. This gave women a sense of power over how they wished to dress as well as some originality, other designers were then influenced to adapt this idea and create new looks.

I think that with all of the new information and skills I have acquired from the start of the course until now, I will have a stronger and better informed body of work, in terms of research and contextual links as well as a high standard of finish on my garment samples now that I have gained skills and experience using the over locker. I hope that with this new information I will be able to play to my strengths in the final major project and create something that I am really proud of and is of a really high standard.

Section 2: Project Concept (approx 200 words) Say what the core idea is and how you intend to approach it (materials, processes and techniques). Say also what you want to learn and achieve
For the final major project I have chosen to look once again at the nineteen-sixties. My aim for this project is to create something very new in terms of current fashion and trends which is heavily inspired by the pattern and colour of this decade that really inspires me creatively. I have decided that my outcome will be a garment and I would like it to be different and original, something that isn’t seen every day. I will be using a monochromatic colour palette and geometric, symmetrical shapes to form the surface pattern of the piece. I like the idea of possibly creating a garment with the main decorative technique to be bondaweb applique patches. They will most likely be in the shape of squares. I do not plan on using techniques to create imagery e.g. heat transfer paints/ paper or screen printing etc. I hope to start making the piece relatively early in the nine week process so that I will have plenty of time to finish and refine my garment so that it is my best possible work. I would like to create my own pattern for whatever garment I wish to make so that I can develop that skill further.

I intend on researching at least six popular and unusual designers from the sixties and trying to create links with the current fashion trends. I will be looking at architecture for my primary research, studying buildings and structures around Exeter and any other places I can visit in the Easter holidays, hopefully London. I will also attempt to visit the fashion exhibition in Bath as part of my primary research as they currently have an exhibit on fashion through the decades.

Section 3: Evaluation
During the final major project I endeavour to make evaluative comments throughout my book, during each stage of this project. I will then summarise all my major decisions which have informed the direction of my work in my final evaluation/ conclusion to the project.

I will record all of my thoughts and decision making during my work and I will document any and all changes of my ideas as and when I make them. I will be certain that my new aims and ideas are clearly stated so that my thought process is clear and easy to follow. I hope to keep all of my thoughts reflected throughout my sketchbook to cover all of the projects units. I will look at and evaluate at least six designers and artists throughout the process to inform my ideas.
