Future Plans.
This time next year I hope to be studying a degree in Fashion Design at one of my chosen universities. After I achieve my degree at the end of the three or four year course I would like to get a job in industry or work on starting up my own business.

Degree Options.

Option One:
Fashion with Business Studies BA (Hons)- Brighton University:

This course can either be 3 or 4 years, 4 if you opt to do an industrial placement year. In year 1 students will develop the technical skills of fashion design, including pattern cutting, draping and garment manufacture, while designing and exploring the cultural and commercial contexts of fashion. In the second year, design projects will broaden your knowledge of different fashion market sectors through diverse projects which test your design skills. You’ll build a body of design work and garment samples to add to your professional portfolio. On the BA(Hons), in your final year, whether on a three or four-year programme, you will design and make a collection of market-specific outfits for womenswear or menswear. You will also produce a professional portfolio of design work, a dissertation and business plan.

Entry Requirements:
Entry requirements can vary but typically A Level students will be expected to achieve ABB grades alongside a strong portfolio of work. For BTEC DDD is required and at least a C in English Language and Mathematics at GCSE level. There portfolio advice is to include: 15-20 drawings and ideas on A1 or A2 sheets, not mounted onto heavy card or in plastic sheets
  • Your ability to develop and carry ideas forward from concept
  • Your potential to experiment and explore ideas and techniques in 2D and 3D
  • Examples of life drawing and an awareness of the body as a site for investigation
  • Two working sketchbooks
  • Awareness of contemporary fashion.
Course fees are £9,000 per year for UK/EU students. Fees for accommodation will then be added on top of this and is usually paid in installments each month as rent.

Advantages:
An advantage of this course is having access to all of the facilities the university has to offer. Another advantage is that students have an opportunity to do a placement year in the industry to gain experience of the world of fashion. Brighton university also offer bursaries and other financial support, scholarships and government funding: grants and loans. Many students on this course are now employed by big names including: Marc Jacobs, Alexander Mcqueen and WGSN.

Course Leader:
Craig graduated from the University of Brighton in 1996 and has worked with international designers including Sonnentag Mulligan, John Galliano, Emma Cook and Roland Mouret. He has an in-depth understanding of contemporary fashion design and industry practice as well as expert skills in fashion design, creative pattern cutting and garment manufacture.
Craig has taught at undergraduate and postgraduate level for over 14 years at a variety of universities and in 2011 received a Student Experience award in recognition of his work and contribution to the subject.

Option Two:


Fashion Pattern Cutting BA (Hons)- UAL University:

This new course focuses on creative approaches to the production of contemporary fashion, and promotes innovative cutting, fabric sourcing and digital technologies in the development of structured and unstructured clothing.  You will learn the skills of design research, design interpretation and three-dimensional realisation, presentation, fit alteration, pattern drafting and adaptation, construction and manufacture, fabric sourcing, trend investigation, market analysis and awareness of sustainability and ethical issues. You will acquire broader academic skills which allow you to see the context of your particular study in the wider perspectives of fashion, society and the environment, together with the professional, communication and business skills you will need for successful employment in today’s global fashion industry. You will have the option of doing a placement year in the industry between the second and final year of the course.

Entry Requirements:
Entry to this course is extremely competitive and students should achieve or already have the requirement below.
Two ‘A’ level pass at grade C or above PLUS passes in three GCSE subjects at grade C or above
OR
BTEC National Diploma in a fashion related subject PLUS passes in three GCSE subjects at grade C or above
OR
NVQ level 3 in a related subject PLUS passes in three GCSE subjects at grade C or above
OR
A one year Foundation Diploma in Art and Design PLUS passes in three GCSE subjects at grade C or above
OR
Access course in a relevant subject PLUS passes in three GCSE subjects at grade C or above
OR equivalent awards
Preferred subjects include Art, Design, English and Maths.
This course requires a minimum 160 UCAS tariff points.
Portfolio and Interview advice:
For this course your portfolio should show evidence of: drawing / presentation skills; fashion and cultural awareness; level of research, exploration and experimentation; 3D awareness through product development or technical drawing; sense of colour and texture; technical competence; design and materials selection; and visual communication skills.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate the following at interview: a current awareness of fashion in terms of fabric development, new designers and fashion trends; an understanding of the design process; an understanding of this course; the ability to work in a team; and the ability to work independently.

Advantages:
This course offers Undergraduate funding in the form of bursaries, scholarships and awards. Similar to the previous course, this one also offers a placement year to gain experience in industry. Students have the chance to attend trade fairs, enter industry competitions, visit exhibitions and go on field trips and visits. Being in London gives every student opportunities to explore and be inspired by the cultural, intellectual and social life of one of the great capital cities of the world.

Programme Director:

Polly Kenny is the Programme Director for BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles and BA (Hons) Fashion Pattern Cutting and has an MA in Fashion Studies. Her industry experience is extensive and has been through collaborative partnerships with, for example, Broderie Anglaise and Peter Wright Europe Ltd, with clients, including Ronit Zilka and Morris Angels, and at the industry’s textile fairs. She is a member of the Higher Education Academy and Vice Chair of the London Branch of the Society of Dyers and Colourists. Her practice-based research focuses on the mark of the hand through digital and craft processes investigating the archive and textile memories.

Option Three:

Fashion BA (Hons) University Of West England, Bristol:
Our BA(Hons) Fashion course will help you develop the key skills and professional attitude needed for a successful career in fashion. It will nurture your creativity and help you re-think what 'fashion' means today. You will gain a unique insight into all areas of the industry from the development of textiles to the design and manufacture of fashion collections to the production of images and publications.
Fashion is based at Bower Ashton Campus, part of the City Campus. Exceptional facilities and resources include state-of-the-art digital media studios and our production and fabrication workshops offer a combination of traditional tools and the latest technology.You will work in a design studio environment with exceptional facilities and industry-standard equipment. The course places emphasis on the essential skills of drawing, fashion design, research and market awareness. It offers a robust core of pattern cutting and garment construction. You will make all your own garments. You will explore knit, stitch and print, as well as new technologies in textiles including CAD, digital embroidery and work with new materials. 
Entry Requirements:
Tariff points: 280 
GCSE: Grade C or above in English Language, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
 A-level subjects: No specific subjects required. Points from A-Level General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-Levels. 
EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: A minimum of DMM from the BTEC Diploma. 
Access: Achievement of the HE Diploma; to include 15 L3 credits at merit; achievement of Level 2 credits giving GCSE equivalency (where appropriate) in English Language. Applicants completing Level 3 credits in Art and Design are guaranteed an interview.
 Baccalaureate IB: 25 points
Successful applicants are generally those with the strongest portfolios. Students of all ages and from all social backgrounds are recruited with a variety of qualifications including Foundation Studies Diploma, BTEC National Diploma, A levels or equivalent qualification in Art and Design.
Applicants demonstrating commitment to and knowledge of the subject on their application form are invited to a selection session where they will be required to present a collection of their creative work to demonstrate a good practical ability in and understanding of their chosen field.
The emphasis of your portfolio should be on be on quality rather than quantity and could include sketchbooks, garments and textiles and other 2D and 3D work. Students who do not meet the minimum academic entry requirements but have significant life and/or work experience will be considered on an individual basis.
Advantages:
Our Sewing suite comprises a wide range of excellent industry-standard and domestic sewing machines, including overlockers, buttonhole and digital embroidery machines, including a 15-thread industrial digital embroidery machine. Double-bed industrial knitting machines are complemented by domestic flatbed machines, a steam bed and linkers. Our textile workshops also have excellent resources. As a UWE Bristol student, you will have access to all the technical equipment, resources and support on campus.
Course Leader:
Deborah studied for her BTEC Foundation in Art and Design at Norwich School of Art and Design. She soon realised that her passion was textiles and fashion, so from there she went on to gain a 1st class BA (Hons) degree in Textiles at Loughborough College of Art and Design. Then she went onto Goldsmiths College, London, where she gained an MA in Textiles with distinction.
Deborah has worked in some of the top colleges in the country, specialising in Textiles and Art & Design. She has been a Lecturer at Central Saint Martins School of Art, Course Leader in Textiles BA (Hons) at Goldsmiths College, London and Course Leader for BA (Hons) Contemporary Textiles Practices at Norwich School of Art and Design. Deborah has been the Reviews Editor of the Textile Journal of Cloth and Culture since 2009.
Deborah is now the Programme Manager (BA Hons Fashion), Faculty of Creative Industries at University of the West of England. She has been at UWE for more than 6 years. She inspires the students with her passion for the industry and has her finger on the textile pulse.
